CAMBRILS AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM

Introduction

The Agricultural Museum was opened on 10 January 1998. It is an expression of the Agricultural Cooperative and Agrarian Savings Bank's desire to combine economic and cultural development. Following an agreement with the Cambrils Town Council, the museum housed in the former Cooperative wine cellar was incorporated into the Cambrils Museum of History network.

The building

The old Cambrils Agricultural Cooperative wine cellar was inaugurated in 1921, thanks to the efforts of all the members of what was then the Agricultural Production Syndicate. The architect Bernardí Martorell began work on the design of the building in 1914, in a style clearly influenced by Antoni Gaudí. The location of the building on a slope saved on power during the wine production process, as the liquid from the grapes was decanted from container to another until it became "must", or unfermented grape juice, and was stored in barrels or large earthenware jars.

The restoration work begun by the Agricultural Cooperative in 1994 had the support of the Cambrils Town Council and the Tarragona Provincial Government. The project included the conversion of the old Cooperative Wine Cellar into a Museum and a Farm Shop, where you can buy the Cooperative's own products. Special mention should be made of the Cooperative's star product - the Siurana "denomination of origin" virgin olive oil.

The permanent exhibition

The main hall of the old Cambrils Cooperative wine cellar contains an in-context exhibit of the wine and olive oil making processes. Visitors can follow the different stages of the process and see the various machines and apparatus used, both in the traditional hand-made method and the industrial method. Explanatory panels describe how the raw material of grapes and olives are turned into the final product.

Also on display are a wide variety of presses, earthenware jars, wineskins and hogsheads used for storage and transport, as well as other tools and machines used in the production of wine and olive oil.
