THE "TORRE DE L'ERMITA"

Introduction

The "Torre de l'Ermita' (Hermitage Tower) is a mediaeval watchtower located next the Sanctuary of 'La Mare de Déu del Camí', very close to the route of the ancient Roman Via Augusta. The first known mention of the tower is found in a 1375 document of King Pere III.

The building was included in the agreement between the Cambrils Town Council and the Centre for Cambrils Studies and has been part of the Cambrils Museum of History since 1996.

The building

This is a rectangular construction of thick walls reinforced by bossed ashlars on the corners, crowned with merlons and with small apertures for defence. Its strategic location alongside the "Camí Ral" highway and at one of the entrances to Cambrils made it one of the key defensive points in the town.

In the 18th century the Sanctuary of La Mare de Déu del Camí was built adjoining the tower and from then on it belonged to the various religious orders that occupied the sanctuary over the years. In the 19th century its height was taken advantage of for transmitting visual and telegraphic signals.

It was in a state of abandonment during the 20th century until the nineteen-seventies when the Town Council began its restoration. Later, the Centre for Cambrils Studies undertook restoration work with the aim of consolidating the building and converting it into Cambrils' first museum, specifically to house the archaeological collections.

The exhibition

The current exhibition is "A Place known as Cambrils" which contains documents, models and photographs that attest to the importance of the town in mediaeval times. Other exhibits include the town's oldest-known stone heraldic shields.
