The "Cambrils Museum of History" is a recent cultural project that combines diverse aspirations into one common goal - that of fostering the preservation, dissemination, and management of the town's historical and cultural heritage. Its inception came about in 1999, when the Town Council established the Cambrils Museum of History Autonomous Body with the participation of the Centre for Cambrils Studies and the Agricultural Cooperative-Cambrils Agrarian Savings Bank. Together they constitute the collection begun in 1985 by the Centre for Cambrils Studies when the "Torre de l'Ermita" (Hermitage Tower), the first museum in Cambrils, was opened. At the same time, the basic structure of a new museum network was set out in accordance with the "Museums of Catalonia Act".
The new structure for the "Cambrils Museum of History" is made up of five historical buildings either in public and private ownership: the 'Molí de les Tres Eres' (a former water mill), the 'Torre de l'Ermita' (Hermitage Tower), the old wine cellar of the Agricultural Cooperative, the 'Torre del Port' (Port Watchtower) and the Roman villa of La Llosa. These sites, some of which are still being restored or converted, represent different aspects of the history of Cambrils, ranging from the prehistoric period to the 20th century. It is, in effect, a decentralized network of museums with a headquarters in the 'Molí de les Tres Eres'.
In addition to the opening of these different sites, the various organizations involved in the running of the museum network have set up a joint project to carry out a series of activities. These include temporary exhibitions, summer workshops, talks, and courses. They are programmed throughout the year and provide an alternative to the standard museum visit, while at the same time bringing the museums to the attention of a wider public.
One aim of these activities is to offer visitors to Cambrils the chance of getting to know the cultural heritage of the area in which they have chosen to spend a few days of their lives. But perhaps more importantly, the museum project allows the townspeople of Cambrils to discover anew the buildings that form part of their everyday lives and to learn something of the common past that identifies us as a community.
